The Wall Falls
On the night of November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall fell. A symbol of the Cold War, a symbol of an era of communist injustice and isolation, a symbol of a divided Europe now had people jumping and singing on top of it.
All over Germany and Europe, a new era was beginning, an era of unity, power, and peace. In Berlin, on that fateful night of November 9, 1989, a border that split Germany in two for 28 years was opened and never closed again.
This unforgettable spectacle was a turning point in history for many reasons. It led to greater European unity, a bond between east and west. Eventually it led to a stronger economy for Germany and the EU. The main reason why it is a turning point, though, is that it marked the end of the Cold War, and the death of Communism in Europe. The fall did not happen independently. It was caused by many factors:
· Uprisings against communism started in Poland, with the Solidarity movement and Lech Walesa at the Gdansk Shipyards,
· Mikhail Gorbachev, the reform-oriented leader of the Soviet Union,
· Ronald Reagan, who let Germany know they had support in the USA,
· The pope from Poland and the Catholic Church as well as other church groups who met illegally.
· And most importantly, the common people! They organized mass demonstrations against the regimes in many Eastern European countries including the GDR (East Germany’s official name at the time).
This website will explain why the Berlin Wall was built, how it fell, who contributed to the fall, and most importantly, why the night of November 9, 1989, was a turning point in history for the whole world.
