How I chose and my topic:
I chose my topic because of my interest in international history and European history, especially Germany's. The fall of the Berlin Wall was especially interesting to me because it dealt with ordinary people bringing down an oppressive militaristic regime.
How I conducted my research:
I interviewed the principal of the German Language School Westwood (GLSW) who was raised in the former East Germany and escaped to West Germany. I also used databases such as EBSCO, the GHDI documents archive in Washington D.C. I also used George Mason University’s “Making the History of 1989” website which has a large collection of sources of events leading up the fall of the Soviet Union. I also went to William Paterson University's library.
How I created my website:
I tried use a design that reflected the mood surrounding the dark nature of the Berlin Wall. The title font gives the mood of old graffiti, on a dark background, the Berlin Wall. The "graffiti" can also be seen as resistance to the wall.
How my project relates to my theme:
My project relates to the theme “Turning Points in History” because the fall of the Berlin Wall was a major turning point in the events preceding the collapse of the Soviet Union. After the fall of the Soviet Union relations between East and West became much improved.
